Carbon Sequestration Potential and Environmental Impacts of Utilizing Crop Residues for Biochar Implementation in China

  • The carbon sequestration potential and environmental impacts of crop residue biochar implementation in China are quantified by using life cycle assessment combined with Gabi software. The results show that the annual GWP100 (global warming potential at 100-year scale) value of the biochar system can reach -921.66 kg CO2e, which can significantly improve the carbon sequestration in China; The realization of negative carbon emission mainly depends on the bio-oil and pyrolysis gas generated to offset the coal-fired generation, and the carbon storage realized by biochar in the soil. Among all the parameters, the biochar yield has the greatest influence on the carbon sequestration potential of the whole system; the biochar system can also alleviate human toxicity potential, acidification potential and other environmental problems; the environmental feasibility of biochar implementation is confirmed.
